How To Make Mochi Donuts

Mister Donut opened in Japan in 1971 and was one of the first large donut shops in Japan. The donuts at Mister Donut are a lot of people’s favorites and for a good reason.

Mochi donuts were created by Mister Donut in Japan. They are also referred to as Pon de Ring donuts. Pon de Ring donuts were designed with the idea of the Japanese consumer and their needs in mind.

Mochi donuts are soft and airy but they are chewy at the same time. They also have a lovely crisp to them.

If you want to know more about the scrumptious mochi donut and how to make it, then you’ve come to the right place (see also ‘How To Store Mochi‘).

What Are Mochi Donuts?

Mochi donuts or Pon de Ring donuts are very popular in Japan. They are a hybrid of Japanese and American pastries. The donuts are popular amongst those with gluten intolerance since the original mochi donuts recipe is naturally gluten-free.

The traditional Pon de Ring donuts have a chewy texture to them that is unique compared to other donuts. The donuts have a unique appearance as they are made from eight small dough balls that are connected together.

Mochi donuts are then coated in a glaze. The flavor of the glaze is dependent on the flavor of the donuts.

Mochi donuts and Pon de Ring are names that are often used interchangeably. Mochi donuts are in the shape of Pon de Ring donuts but there are some slight differences between the two. The main difference is that they are made with different flours.

Mochi donuts are typically made with glutinous rice flour, whereas Pon de Ring donuts are made with tapioca donuts. Mochi donuts are also more popular in the states compared to Pon de Rings which are popular in Japan.

Read on to find out step by step how to make mochi donuts.

Step One

The first step is to mix together the dry ingredients.

You’ll want to sift the all-purpose flour into a bowl, but hold back one tablespoon of the flour. Then you want to mix in the baking powder, cornstarch, granulated sugar, and glutinous rice flour. Once this is done, leave this mixture to one side.

Step Two

Next, you want to put the silken tofu through the sieve. The silken tofu should be pushed through a sieve into a clean bowl. The sieve should be a fine mesh one.

Make sure you scrape the sieve so that all the tofu goes through the sieve. Once this is done, you should have tofu that is broken down.

Step Three

After you have finished with the silken tofu, you should add the egg and the two tablespoons of water to the silken tofu. You should use a whisk to mix it until it is nicely combined.

Step Four

Now it is time to combine all the ingredients you’ve prepared together. It is important that you add the wet ingredients (the tofu mixture) to the dry ingredients, not the other way around.

Once you add the wet ingredients to the dry, use a spatula to mix them together. The mixture might seem dry at first but keep working the mixture. Once the mixture starts to come together, stop using the spatula and use your hands to make sure it is fully combined.

The mixture should look like a dough rather than a batter.

Step Five

Once you have formed the mixture into a dough, it is time to form the dough balls. For the best results, use a kitchen scale to make sure each dough ball weighs the same amount.

Each individual dough ball should be around seven grams. When you have finished making the dough balls, you should have around 64 in total.

Step Six

The next step is to form the mochi donuts. For the best frying results, you should cut out small pieces of parchment paper that are around 5 inches by 5 inches.

You should use eight dough balls to form a mochi donut. Connect the dough balls together to form a mochi donut. It is important not to squash the dough balls together as this will make them lose their shape.

Step Seven

At this stage, your donuts are ready to be fried. To do this, heat the donuts in a pot so that the oil is two inches tall in the pot.

To make sure that your mochi donuts are fried properly, make sure the oil is heated between 325 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The best way to make sure this is the right temperature is to use a thermometer. Then you can start to fry the donuts.

Put the donut that is on the parchment paper onto a spoon and slide it into the hot oil, making sure that the parchment paper is on the bottom of the donut.

You then want to wait until you can see the donut starting to float a little and flip it. If you are not sure how your donut is doing, flip the donut after one minute of frying.

Once you flip the donut you can use some tongs to remove the parchment paper. Then fry the donut for another minute.

When the donut is ready to be removed from the hot oil, get it out with the spoon and place it on a plate that is lined with paper towels. This will remove any excess oil from the donut.

Step Eight

After frying all the donuts and waiting for them to cool down, it is time to glaze them. You can do this with the glaze of your choice. Whether that is a simple powdered sugar glaze or even a matcha glaze.
